Hunter appointed to council finance and audit committee

NEWLY-appointed advisory member of Gisborne District Council’s finance and audit committee, Robert Hunter, is looking forward to assisting the council with complex financial matters.He has been appointed because of his financial and accounting experience to sit in an advisory capacity on the committee.

Committee chairman Brian Wilson supports the engagement of an independent member who is able to understand the council’s financial reporting requirements, risk management and audit processes.

“Many audit committees for other council’s do have an independent person with financial experience, and in fact some have more than one.”

“I value independent financial expertise when dealing with the council’s controlled trading organisation, particularly when considering business cases for transfer of assets to Gisborne Holdings Ltd and the financial worth of doing so.”

“The committee were eager to appoint someone with the ability to explain technical matters to other members of the committee.”

Mr Hunter said he was looking forward to a governance role after many years experience in providing management advice to boards.

“I am keen to ensure that councillors receive clear and meaningful financial information, and that they understand what is being presented to them.”

“As a ratepayer, I look forward to seeing our region progress. Although excited about many of the projects being proposed for the future, I want to ensure as a district we operate within our means and do not overburden ourselves with debt.”

Mr Hunter’s past roles have included treasury management for a bank, as well as management and chief financial officer roles at both Tairawhiti District Health Board and Tairawhiti Polytechnic.

“As someone who enjoys financial analysis, I see this role as an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to our community,” he said.
